About Me
All web graphics and content are copyright Mary Lockwood 2004-2008.
I live happily with my husband, Gary, and three kids, Faith(9), Jake(8) & Claire(4), in Northeast Ohio in an old old house with lots of woodwork and creaky steps.  I love it.  We live on a street where we keep the dandelions mowed short and sit on our porches watching kids play.

My lampwork journey started out five years ago as a beaded amulet bag.  To make a long story short- I found a seedbead amulet bag that I loved.  Couldn't afford it so I set out to make my own.  Did it, and became addicted to beads.  Big beads, little beads, round beads, shiny shiny beads. Moved to bigger jewelry making, then went on to custom made purses.  Purchasing lampwork beads from artists was limiting and  I wanted to match fabric patterns so I set out to make my own beads.  Here I am today, focused on torch work.  I still knit and other things, but it is always just for me or loved ones.  I rarely sell anything I make other than beads.

I love to teach lampworking to others and see the fire grow in their own eyes.  It's a real trip to see someone create a one of a kind object and actually be a part of that.

Some trivia about me:
Favorite movies- 'Legends of the Fall', 'Curse of the Were-Rabbit', 'Flushed Away', 'Pirates of the Carribean'.  I'm looking forward to going to the movies a lot this summer...we have one of the few remaining drive-ins here.
Music I listen to while torching- Metallica, Black-Eyed Peas, Sheryll Crow, Funk is a favorite--I've made some wicked beads listening to 'Brick House' and 'Superfreak'.  I listen to everything. I usually love classical music but it doesn't work for me while I'm torching.
Favorite Pizza- Plain Cheese.
Personal Indulgences- Hot, quiet cuppa tea--milk and two lumps.  Strong Black Coffee.
Favorite pass-times- Reading (I enjoy Janet Evanovich, Diana Gabaldon, and non-fiction)  I also like to watch Food TV.  My favorite food personality- Jamie Oliver.
Favorite Television Programs- Men in Trees, Good Eats, MythBusters, anything on Discovery (I'm riveted!)
What I'm Good At- cooking, language-related skills, organizing, making beads, I'm quite handy actually.
What I STINK At- sports (I was always the last one picked), math
Place I would most like to visit- Scotland

Below are some pictures of my studio and a link to my family photo album.  Thanks for stopping by to get to know me a little better. 1/7/08- I recently moved my studio space into my basement!  I will be posting updated pictures soon.
My Studio - The Torcher Chamber
Here's a picture of my glass stash and AIM 84BD tabletop kiln with fuji digital controller.  The kiln is the most important part of your studio!
On the right you will see my kiln faerie who watches over my beads while they are annealing.  She was made by Steve Selchow.
Here is the other half of my L-shaped workbench.  My hubby built this and it is mounted to the wall to allow the most efficient use of a small space.

My torch is a Nortel Minor burner which I run on propane and an Airsep 5LPM oxygen concentrator.  I'm very satisfied with this setup.

You also see my fire extinguisher, all my hundreds and hundreds of stringers, my mandrels and my 'Saddle Stool'.  The saddle stool promotes good posture and helps ease back strain and neck fatigue.

Right in the center of the picture you can see the Luna Moth carving my husband
did for me.
