Day One
Alaska Bound!
I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be travelling to Eagle River, Alask in March '08 and teaching for 4 wonderful days at Glass Firenze, the awesome new lampworking studio run by fellow glass artist, Deborah Spence!
Friday March 14, 2008
Sculptural Workshop 4pm to 9pm
$150.00
Click HERE to go to Glass Firenze Site to register!

Add a new dimension to your lampwork beads with a sculptural element.   From frogs to figures, I'll be demonstrating and teaching the techniques that make sculptural work fun and durable.

What will be covered in this 5-hour class:

*
Simple Frog Bead on a bicone- this lays the foundation for the class, we will concentrate on bead-prep, heat control and color theory.

*
Complex Frog Bead- adding another layer, putting in the all-important details, if you're feeling brave...I'm bringing a goody bag for every student with dichroic, cubic zirconia +++ !

*
Simple Mushroom- my organic, nature-inspired mushroom using minimal amount of tooling and learning how to make gravity your friend.

*
Leaves- our first foray into the world of thinner glass AND offhand work.  These simple, graceful leaves will break the barrier and give you confidence.

*
Simple Fish- Again, using minimal tooling and gravity we will shape the fish body, then add single color fins and lips to learn placement.  Again, heat control with the added challenge of thin, protruding fins.  Now we're getting into it!

*
Complex Fish- Kick it up a notch...adding design elements to the fish body, layering colors in the fins and adding a bit more sparkle to the eyes.  Using all the techniques and heat control we've learned through the class, this is where we can really get creative.

This is the foundation of the sculptural class.

Every group of students has different needs and skill levels.  As time allows, we will explore small vessel shapes, troubleshoot specific problems individuals might be trying to overcome in their own work, and some seasonal beads, in this case---spring!

Can't wait to see you there.
Day Two
Every student has different needs and skill levels.  For each bead, I will first demonstrate to the group. Then, students will take their places and I walk from station to station giving guidance and instruction.

Completely pre-written class notes will be passed out at the beginning of each class.  You will not have to write anything down unless you come across something personal to add..those little light-bulb moments!

Join me for Encasing Bootcamp--- a concentrated attack on one of lampworking's most challenging tasks!  I demonstrate and troubleshoot several methods of encasing. From large gather, to around the world with stringers, you are bound to find the encasing methods that work best for your beadmaking style.  This class is a wonderful foundation for the florals class being taught the next day and the Aquarium Bead Class on Monday.  This is an 8 hour intermediate class.

What will be covered in this 8-hour class:

Mostly we will be using different methods to encase simple bases.  If we spend too much time on the bases, you don't have as much practice time for the encasing techniques and I have found that if the base is simple, you will be more relaxed about encasing it.  There is a level of 'worry' that comes from making a beautiful floral, then trying to encase it in a new way.  This method lets you concentrate on what we are here for---encasing!  You will go home with the skills you need to improve your encasing of any bead.

*
Around the World with a full sized rod- this lays the foundation for the class, we will concentrate on how to 'lock down' your base bead to avoid smearing and distortion.  Heat control and flame position.

*
Large Gather- another of the most commonly used encasement methods.  A lesson in patience and surface-only manipulation.

*
Spot Encasing- I’m combining it with what I refer to as ‘hot honey’ encasing that I use a lot for 3-dimensional elements, for example my jellyfish beads, that I want to leave partially raised beneath the clear.

*
Linear Encasing- an important skill great not only for encasing long, slender beads...but when building canes.

*
Lollipop Encasing-  I rarely use this technique in everyday torchwork.  Ok, I’ve never actually needed to use this technique, but that doesn’t mean that YOU won’t love it. It does result in a nice thin encasing, but even though it might look like a shortcut, it isn’t as innocent as it seems.

*
Around the World with Stringers- This stringer encasing method can be a great benefit to people torching on Hot Head or other cooler burning torches because the stringers melt faster than full sized rods. It's also great for people  who work really small.

*
Faux Encasing- Nothing replaces a nice encasement of clear glass for adding amazing depth and sparkle to lampwork beads, but sometimes a bead calls for a little less drama and this is your answer.

The key to this class is student torch time, individual instruction and guidance.

Day Three
Sunday March 16, 2008
Intensive Floral Workshop 10am to 7pm (1hr. lunch)
$215.00

8 Hours of Flowers!!  From complex encased focals to dynamic raised designs, join me for a full day of concentrated garden beads.  Color theory and design will also be covered. Lots of one on one direction.  This is an 8 hour intermediate class.

What will be covered in this 8-hour class:

*
Color Theory.

*
Cubic Zirconia Floral with raked petals- twisties, picking up and applying cz's, raking petals with stringer and encasing

*
Creased Petal Floral- using frits on your base, vine canes, razor tool use, encasing.

*
Cutting Garden Raised Floral- feathering, raking, razor tool use on raised elements and perspective.

*
Complex Creased Petal Floral-The creased petal floral that appeared in the Bead Review 2005 that was published by Deanna Griffin Dove and Brad Pearson.  The methods here build on the creased petal effect we learned earlier and utilize two different encasing techniques covered on day two.

*
Encased Pansies-creative dot placement and color shadowing for dimension.

*
Raised Tropical Flower with Leaves- compounds your use of heat control and razor work. Rake with a tool instead of stringer.

*
Dichroic Cored Floral- concentration here is on the application of dichroic.

*Mandrel Wound Implosion Based floral- based on the tutorial found here on the site, learn how to implode color into clear on a stick!

The key to this class is student torch time, individual instruction and guidance.  I give a LOT of one-on-one during this floral class.  You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, troubleshoot areas that you find difficult and explore new directions.

Day Four

A comprehensive look at my Jellyfish Seascape Beads, I share all my "secrets", tips and techniques for achieving great depth and realism in ocean themed beads.

What will be covered in this 8-hour class:

*
The Stage is Set-using dichroic, twisties, silver and color to create the background to your seascape. How to achieve contrast and balance between your elements.

*
The Supporting Cast- learn to pull the cane needed for sea urchins, small fish, starfish, kelp and fantasy creatures.  Then, learn to apply them!

*
The Stars of the Show- learn how to pull the canes needed for jellyfish tentacles and mantles, how to prep them for use and how to apply them.  Explore how different glasses react together and how you can get special effects with layering and inclusions.

*
Learn how to use the design of the bead to establish a flowing shape.

*
Lots of Focus on heat maintenance in these larger focals.

The key to this class is student torch time, individual instruction and guidance.  I give a LOT of one-on-one during this class.  You will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, troubleshoot areas that you find difficult and explore new directions.
